I’m not sure if anyone noticed, but Apple released a new product last week. The i-something-or-other. The meager media coverage, despite it’s generally low-key nature, did give me pause, though. While the iPad (yes, my tongue is now dislodged from my cheek) doesn’t hold a lot of interest for me outside of its potential to change the e-book landscape, it brought me back to an idea I’d first discussed with fellow ZDNet blogger, Jason Perlow: “The Screen.”

Essentially, I’ve been saving for a high-end laptop/desktop replacement that could handle virtualization, lots of storage, video editing, you name it. My MacBook just isn’t cutting it anymore. So what does that have to do with the iPad, or any other tablet for that matter? The idea of “the screen” and everything the iPad represents means that lugging around one of those slick Core i7 laptops I’ve been eying up is probably a recipe for obsolescence.

I already spend plenty of time in the cloud. Regular readers of my blog over at ZDNet Education will know that I’m pretty fond of Google Apps. When I blog, I write in a web-based editor. My personal website runs on a Joomla! server in my basement so that I can add content from anywhere that I have web access. The growing ecosystem of sites I maintain for my day job? Also content management systems (but not running on boxes in my basement).

My family videos and photos? Migrating slowly to Facebook, or that web server in my basement, or Picasa Web Albums, or wherever. The only reason I’d want them on a local machine is for editing (and even that is getting increasingly less necessary as web applications grow more robust). On a server, I can have redundant disks, backups galore, cloud integration (where do you think I back up my website? To my Ubuntu One account, of course.), and, most importantly, accessibility from anywhere.

The Canon ZR400 is one of the camcorders that perform exceptionally well in one scenario, and exceptionally poorly in another. The Canon ZR400 has really good outdoor functions and with the largest image sensor of all the cameras in the ZR series, has the best image quality and captures 2x the pixels as the other camcorders in the same series. However, the very same camera performs very poorly in low-light, so much so that it's a struggle to see the subjects and even the still photos are useless.

To be sure there are some very good things about the Canon ZR400 – such as the Easy mode, which puts everything on auto-pilot and gives exceptional point and shoot capabilities, maybe one of the best of all the camcorders out there. At the same time the Canon ZR400 features a Program Modes which you can use to manually adjust the focus and other settings.

The Canon ZR400 weighs just over a pound and can easily fit in a coat-pocket. All the buttons are well placed, and just about all of them fall right under the fingers whn holding a camera, which means that over time, you can operate the camera without looking at the camera at all (kinda like typing). Most of the buttons are large and labeled clearly, though some of them are confusing and some people might have a hard time figuring out what they're about (it's the buttons under the LCD screen when you open it). The LCD scene is nice and clear, and offers sharp images. It measures 2.4 inches and houses 112,000 pixels. As far as the other features are concerned, the Canon ZR400 is easy to use even in the Program mode with the preset programs.

Even though the Canon ZR400 costs more than the other camcorders in the ZR series, it might be worth it with the better shooting capabilities, especially indoors. However, even with the better quality than all of the ZR series, the Canon ZR400 still fails to match up to the some of the other camcorders, such as the Panasonic DVR. However, the Canon ZR400 does offer a 14X zoom, which is just above average for camcorders, while the older version, the Canon ZR300 offered 22X.

It's important to note that the Canon ZR400 does have some extra features to help improve it's indoor image quality, such as a LED light (which is a pain to turn on, because you have to engage a the super-night mode with the night more to have it come on), but it still doesn't manage to give impressive results with the indoor images. Also, the three night features are kind of redundant – the night, the super night and such.

The Canon ZR400 doesn't have much to offer as far as still photos are concerned either, and takes only 1 MP , 320×240 resolution pictures which really is just too poor given the competition the Canon ZR400 has. An to add to the disappointment, the Canon ZR400 has no microphone on it. You either have to dub sound on to it, or add an external device to it (which you'll then have to hold or something because there's no room on the camera to place it!).

The Canon ZR400 is a nearly unbeatable camcorder when you're using it outdoors or in well-lit areas, but is one of the poorest investments (just like many other Canon camcorders) when it comes to indoor and dim-light situations. All in all, the Canon ZR400 has some very good features, and some of the improvements that Canon has made are commendable, but at the same time there is much that isleft to be desired from this camcorder that could have been a whole lot more.

The lens is also fairly free from distortion, as this image of harvesting a lavendar crop shows with the barn in the background and the image below of one of the tents on our African Photo Safari. The natural color rendition is also quite good.

The image of flowers demonstrates the very nice edge to edge brightness of the lens. On a test target I could detect a slight difference between the Sigma and the larger and more expensive Nikon, but the differences were very minor and not visible in typical images. While I really loved using the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 and it is clearly a cadillac lens, for anyone on a limited budget or wishing to save a little weight and room the Sigma is an awesome alternative.

The Sigma is a real value as you can snag one for $899 from Amazon or for $899 from B&H. Make sure you are getting the new HSM version (the one our links point to). There is an older, less expensive version but the new one is optimized for use with both small sensor and full frame digital cameras plus it has the much faster focusing motors. For purists the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 AF-S is $1769 at B&H and the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 USM is $1339 at B&H.

Samsung starts off the year 2010 with the official announcement of its new mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, the NX10 — a significant event in the camera industry in more ways than one.

For one, it marks Samsung’s first foray into the mirrorless interchangeable system — a market which thus far dominated by Olympus and Panasonic. For another, it could also spell an end to the South Korean electronic giant’s partnerships with Pentax to co-develop digital SLRs.

Samsung's newly announced NX10 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera wraps a 14.6 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor (1.5x crop factor) and eye-level electronic viewfinder with a 640×480 resolution into a relatively small body measuring just 122×86x41mm without a lens attached. We managed to spend some time with a couple of NX10 bodies with pre-release firmware and all three lenses at the UK launch in London.

Samsung said that it hopes to have the camera on sale in a month or two and is ironing out the final bugs in the firmware before it goes on sale at an estimated £599 inc VAT for the NX10 with the standard 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OIS lens - other versions will be available with the 30mm F2.0 pancake and 50-200 F4.0-5.6 ED OIS lenses.

Samsung said the NX10 is designed for those who don't want the bulk of a dSLR, but want more freedom than you'll ever get from a compact camera - that's how Panasonic and Olympus sell their Micro Four Thirds cameras. As Samsung put it, the NX10 is for “wannabe” photographers and the company expects this market to see massive growth this year.

Despite being an entirely new system with very little in the way of moving parts, the NX10 maintains that air of familiarity and looks very much like a dSLR on a diet. It's surprisingly small in your hand (not much larger than the Olympus EP-1) and the controls feel familiar, but the NX10 has the added benefit of a proper handgrip with a non-slip rubber coating. Admittedly, it's a little small if you regularly use a dSLR, but it still feels comfortable and well balanced with all three of the lenses attached.

The 3in AMOLED screen is undoubtedly the highlight of the camera, but what disappointed us was that there's no way to turn the rear screen's Live View mode off and use it as more of a control panel, leaving the electronic viewfinder for previewing and framing photos. Instead, the electronic viewfinder is activated (and the rear display disabled) when you move your eye up to the eyepiece.

Along the bottom of the display, there's a faux SLR viewfinder strip detailing basic shooting information (shooting mode, shutter speed, aperture, etc). You can also customise the display so that additional information which appears on the right and left hand edges, but it can get a little busy if you turn everything on.

Using the first of the two bodies, we were quite disappointed with the NX10's image quality at anything above ISO 800 (the event was held in the evening in a poorly-lit bar), but this was found to be using a much earlier firmware version than the current one Samsung is testing. We switched to a second body and noise at higher ISOs (up to ISO 1600) was much better controlled with very little in the way of banding; colour saturation didn't really suffer either like it can do on some cameras at higher ISOs.

Image sharpness was also pretty good and we were particularly impressed with how well the 30mm F2.0 pancake lens performed. The two zoom lenses weren't as impressive, but they were certainly adequate for their intended market. We can see the extremely compact 30mm pancake lens being very popular with enthusiasts looking for a relatively compact camera with dSLR-like capabilities if the NX10 lives up to its potential when it's released.

Overall, it's a promising start for Samsung in a new market segment, but we're going to have to reserve our final judgement until we've spent more time with a production NX10 body. We'll bring you a full review as soon as we can.

Dimensions of freezer are posted above. The freezer is about 4 years old but in perfect working condition. I clean it out and defrost it about 3-4 times a year every year. It's an AEG freezer.

CHF 200 is our final price. If it goes into bidding – i guess it would be nice to get a little more….we just got married last weekend, both quit our jobs and going travelling for the next 6 months…so and dosh is more than appreciated!

AEG Electric Heating Company was founded in 1911 and now is a term for Miele kitchen appliances such as dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers and washing machines.

Cinema Verite is a style of flimaking where hand-held cameras, natural sound , typically grainy black and white filem is used, there are no rehearsals and basic editing is used. Perhaps the first and most famous example of this is Robert Flaherty's Nanook of the North in 1922. This is somehwat close, but more a a “cousin” to cineman verite, since there was some scripting involved. In a modern sense Pennebaker and Hegedus' “The War Room” (1993) is a great example of the documentary film tenchnique-cinema verite.

“The War Room” is a behind-the-scenes look at the politics of then Arkansas governor Bill Clinton. It followed everything from the primaries to the presidential campaign. Not seen by the darting eye, the film focuses on the campaign managers and politcal strategists that got “Bubba” Clinton elected to the presidency handily. The main focus is on the “Rajin' Cajun” James Carville, and “Little Boy Wonder” George Stephanopoulos. Unlike more recent “politivcal” documentaries such as Farenheit 911 by Michael Moore, the husband and wife directing team was given unprecedented access to the people behind the political scenes, including the 1992 Democratic National Convention. This was access not seen since Drew's “Crisis” documentary about Robert F. Kennedy. Both of these films are cinema verite at it's best.

My family has grown up on the news. At 6:00 p.m. my mom, brother and I would gather around the dinner table to watch the local news, and then ABC World News Tonight. We watched political debates and kept well-informed-as my mother felt this was important. To this day, I still have that same routine. In 1992 I was eleven years old-and even then I could probably tell you who James Carvill and George Stephanoupoulos were-or at least who I thought they were.

“The War Room changed my mind on both of these political genius'. In fact, that is what cinema veritae does-in its “natural” way-being unobtrusive, one can get different looks at people, both positive and negative. For example, Stephanoupoulos on the 6:30 news may seem like an overconfident, attratictive political whiz kid-or he could be seen as a young political slimeball, give too much power too young. 

But with cinema veritae you see Stephanoupoulos in his natural element-drinking coffee and reading the morning papers. One gets the sense thae he feels his candidate can change the nation and the world. He is earnest and sincere, not stiff and political ike we often would see him on the news.

James Carville on the other hand is known for being brash and unabrasive. He and his wife, Republican strategist Mary Matlin are known for their sparring matches on politics. On television, this is what we see about James Carville, but with cinema veritae and “The War Room” this is what we now know: Carville has a heart and deep appreciation of the workers surrounding him. Scenes where he is receiving priase, he reverts the praise back to his staff with tears in his eyes. That's certainly not being brash-that's being human. That's not being a tough, political, superhero, that's being a person.

Like Nanoon of the North, but not nearly as scripted, “The War Room” never rushes the camera away from moments. The directors allow for things to happen naturally. One of the opening scenes with Carville, Stephanopoulos and Cling reading the newspapers and drinking coffee is so intimate. This makes the documentary far more likeable that Ferenheit 911 where so many pieces were left on the editing room floor. By watching this movie the viewer has the opportunity to like politicians that readily criticize them, as we often do.

Out of all the concepts we have learned thus far in this class, cinema verite is both the most interesting and most prevalent of the modern documentary. I can think of not a better example of this style of film. The viewer is able to listen to words said, appreciate the silence between these words and enjoy the differences between personalities like Carville and Stephanopoulos. 

With this “fly on the wall” technique, we see in just 90 minutes what was 35 hours of footage and 17 days of shooting. The ability for Pennebaker and Hegedus to bring in the lull moments to the dramatic changes in disposition bring forth a type of intrigue for the viewer. This is why the film has been acclaimed and will be a staple for those wishing to learn the cinema verite style.
